GREAT READ! The Empire and The Bomb:How the United States Uses
Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World. It is written by Dr. Joseph Gerson of
AFSC New England. Suggested by Rev. Bill Exner, EPF Convener of the Nuclear Abolition Action Group...Bill says it is a great read. "Could you cte it on the Nuclear Action Group page? Thanks .
“… it is time to time to retire our genocidal first strike policies.
Time to ratify the comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Time to finally fulfill our
treaty obligations to lead negotiations to eliminate the world’s nuclear
arsenals.”
IT’S ALL
ABOUT YOUR ACTIONS, NOT YOUR INTERESTS
It is the 21st century. This is the
Episcopal Church. It is time for regular, focused faithful acts of peace
making.
To that end the National Executive Council
of EPF feels called to transform our interest groups into Issue Action
Teams. Why, because it is not about interest it is about action.
The serious present concerns about the level of violence in our hearts, homes,
communities and internationally demand far more than a passing interest on our
part. Remember, Jesus did not say blessed are those interested in peace,
he said ‘Blessed are those who make peace.’
May I invite you to get in the game in a more
active way by working with us? May I insist you do so in the name of
Christ? EPF has recently set in motion a series of new Action Groups
which you can learn more about by going to www.epfnational.org.
I am helping to lead the Action group to challenge Nuclear Proliferation
at every level. You can contact me through the web site or at exner@comcast.net.
With over 10,000 nuclear warheads in the current U.S. arsenal alone,
and with Administration goals to fund and deploy an entire ‘new
generation’ of nuclear weaponry , the clear, life affirming voice of EPF is
needed more than ever to say ‘NO’ and to take action. Additionally, the
current chatter about the so called advantages of expanding nuclear power needs
a strong and informed corrective from the community of faith both locally and
nationally.
It is time to act. It is your time to
act. In months ahead you will hear about other EPF Action Groups and
opportunities to make peace.
If the nuclear issue is your thing contact me
now. If not then stay tuned and find the area of peace ministry to which
God is guiding you. Martin Luther king stated rightly that every soul has
something good to offer for the cause of peace. You are already interested, now
offer to God your action.
Thanks and blessings,
The Rev. Bill Exner, NEC – New Hampshire

1. If you haven’t already done so, register with the Episcopal Public Policy Network {refer to Join Episcopal Public Policy Network section on this webpage} to receive timely e-mail alerts of Legislative issues of concern to Episcopalians. From time to time, the EPPN will send out alerts of specific issues related to the Budget. 2. The Friends Committee on National Legislation has a very good webpage with various analyses and resources related to the budget. 3. Get Organized Against Nukes '06 In 2005 EPF joined with several coalitions including Pax Christi and United for Peace and Justice to make our voice heard regarding the dangers of nuclear weapons. Below are listed many ways in which you and your community can take action to call for the end of nuclear development and for changes in our national policies and rhetoric.
- Write your mayor and ask that they sign the petition supporting the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who have organized the Mayors for Peace Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons. Mayors all over the world are joining the call. Negotiations will begin in May of 2005 on a treaty for the total elimination of nuclear weapons by 2020. Already, over 600 mayors – including more than 60 from the United States (see list) – have joined the campaign.
-
Fax Your Representative Click here to find your elected officials' contact info by entering your ZIP. Download "A Prayer for Congress" and use it as your fax! (Or you can view it in html format here). This prayer was written for the National Day of Prayer, May 5, 2005 and is applicable at any time.
- Join the Episcopal Public Policy Network (EPPN)
The EPPN is a nationwide grassroots network of Episcopalians, run out of the Office of Government Relations of the Episcopal Church, who call and/or write their members of Congress and the Administration to advocate positions of the Church. Members of the EPPN are committed to living by the promise we make in our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace. Through the EPPN, we can make our voices heard, as Episcopalians, on Capital Hill. Issues relating to nuclear abolition are among their most popular initiatives. You can join the EPPN e-mail “action alert” network by pointing your browser to http://episcopal.grassroots.com/. If you have any about the EPPN action alert network you can call the Office of Government Relations at 1-800-228-0515 and tell them you are calling about the EPPN. Someone there will be able to help you.
- Muslim-Christian Perspectives on the Nuclear Weapons Danger
Endorse “A Statement Regarding Muslim-Christian Perspectives on the Nuclear Danger” and discuss this initiative in your faith community. Muslim-Christian Perspectives on the Nuclear Weapons Danger. Leaders and scholars representing Christian, Muslim, and other faith traditions met together in May of 2005 in a meeting convened by the Islamic Society of North America, the Managing the Atom Project of the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, the Rockefeller Brothers fund, and the Churches’ Center for Theology and Public Policy (CCTP). One of the “outcomes” of this meeting is the statement, “We Affirm Our Believe in the One God” A Statement Regarding Muslim-Christian Perspectives on the Nuclear Danger.” Those of you who are familiar with The Urgent Call to End the Nuclear Danger will note similarities in the wording of the two initiatives. In addition to representing another important faith-based statement calling for an end to nuclear danger, this initiative speaks volumes to the peace-loving faith of the majority of Muslims. For more information on this initiative please go here.
- Check out the nuclear abolition and disarmament links on the EPF links page. These links may be found here.
- Read about nuclear weapons facilities in the U.S.
- Stop the Bombs.org has a map mapping some of the nuclear weapons facilities in the U.S. They also include a short description of each site, whom to contact for more information, and related information.
- The Hanford Watch has a good website with a lot of information about the Hanford Nuclear Weapons complex in Washington. They also maintain an e-mail list. Their website is http://www.hanfordwatch.org/.
- Another source of information for the Nevada Test Site and Yucca Mountain, including opportunities for activism, is The Nevada Desert Experience.
