Working Together for Peace
In March of
2008 we will mark five years since the war with Iraq began. In that time many Christians have actively
raised their voices against the war, promoting a vision of peace and diplomacy
as viable alternatives. And yet, despite
our best efforts, we have failed to influence those in political power and
bring about the change so many Americans long for. In 2008 we gather to affirm our commitment to
Christ’s vision for peace among humankind and recognize the power of the Christian
community when it is truly knit together in a common cause. We pledge to offer a prophetic and unceasing
voice for peace and to join with other Christians across the country to speak
with one clear voice.
Towards
this end I commit to:
____ Lead my congregation in one act of witness
and/or worship
focused
on peace during Lent.
____ Attend a national gathering for peace in Washington, DC
on
March
7-9 and encourage members of my congregation to attend as they are able.
____ Participate in a collective witness for peace
in Portland to
mark
the five-year anniversary of the war
with Iraq
on March 15 and encourage
members of my congregation to participate as they are able
____ Call
on my senators to pursue a legislative agenda which favors
diplomatic
and peaceful solutions over military actions in Iraq and encourage members of my
congregation to do the same as they are able (this will be more specific by
mid- spring).
