Acts 1:6-14
On Trinity Sunday,
we remember that one of Jesus’ missions here on earth was to make God
less inaccessible and more approachable. Instead of continuing the
Hebrew custom of not uttering God’s name, “Yahweh,” Jesus tells
sinners, outcasts and his disciples that they should call upon God as
“Abba/Father/Daddy.” “Father” speaks more to a relationship in a
family system, but we can lose that relational idea when we hear of the
Kingdom of God, which brings up an image of ruler and subjects. Jesus’
life and actions indicate that God’s reign is more of an
anti-Kingdom—one with no domination, one guided by the Spirit, Jesus
says, “to bring good news to the poor...to let the oppressed go free.”
